Why Volunteer in Sport?

There are many ways to get involved in sport across South Yorkshire. Whether it be in a coaching role, an officiating role, support with statistical match analysis, website design, club or event organisation; these pages will highlight the different opportunities available to you.

Sports clubs and organisations rely heavily on the support of dedicated volunteers who provide a valuable resource and you may wish to offer your skills and time to assist these clubs.  Alternatively, you may be a club or organisation looking for additional support through volunteers who will be able to help out with your junior section, with coaching, at events or with administration.  Volunteering in sport can offer a wide range of opportunities for everyone.

Volunteering is an ideal way to get involved in sports that you’re really interested in, or just to give some support to your local club and community.  Even if you’re not interested in sport, your skills, knowledge and time can still be vital support to the club and organisation.

There are many reasons to get involved with a sports club or organisation as a volunteer:

  • You will meet new people that are interested in the same sport(s) or activities as you.
  • You will gain experience, confidence and new skills that employers value, such as working as part of a team, problem solving and developing initiative.
  • You will gain experience of leadership through taking part in activities you enjoy.
  • You can experience the organisation and administration behind local and international events.
  • You can develop useful contacts in your chosen sport/activity, which may lead to possible employment opportunities.
  • You will find it makes your college, university and/or job application stronger when having a volunteer role on your CV.

How much time do you really have to give?

This is up to you! Some clubs and community groups would like support for an hour or two a week, others may require help for a whole day for a specific event that they are running.  A flexible approach to volunteering whilst also offering a commitment will ensure both you and clubs will get the best volunteering experiences.
