The Active People Survey

The Active People Survey is a survey of adults aged 16+ living in England. The survey is the largest of its kind ever to be conducted in this country. During 2005/6, a total of 363,724 adults living in England took part in the survey (and around 1000 people in each South Yorkshire local authority took part in the survey). The survey was repeated in 2007/8 and 2008/9 with a total of around 188,000 interviews being completed in each survey (around 500 people in each SY authority). The survey will be repeated again in 20010/11 and 2001/12.

The Active People Survey gathers data on the type, duration and intensity of people's participation in different types of sport and active recreation, as well as information about volunteering, club membership, and receiving tuition from an instructor or coach, participation in competitive sport and satisfaction with local sports provision.

The survey provides by far the largest sample size ever established for a sport and recreation survey and allows levels of detailed analysis previously unavailable. It identifies how participation varies from place to place and between different groups in the population.

Here available for download is an analysis of the Active People Survey data (2005 to 2009) for the whole of South Yorkshire and each local authority area, prepared by the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University.

Active People Diagnostic

Sport England have also developed the Active People Diagnostic which is an innovative online reporting and analysis tool which gives partners access to Active People Survey results at the touch of a button. It also enables bespoke reporting and analysis that enables users to assess levels and patterns of sport and active recreation in their area or sport, and to benchmark and profile performance.

Active People Diagnostic is a powerful local strategic planning tool and is used by local authorities, county councils, county sports partnerships, national governing bodies, and many other national and regional partners. To register to use the site please follow the link below
