Boccia

Boccia

Cerebral Palsy Sport

Boccia is a competitive game that can be played one-on-one, in pairs, or with teams of three. It is played on a specially marked court, with a hard surface. The aim of the game is for players to throw or bowl game balls so that they get them as close as possible to a special target ball.

The game begins with a player throwing the white target ball onto the court. Opponents then take turns trying to throw or bowl their game balls as close as possible to the target ball.

When all the game balls have been thrown, a referee determines the points awarded to individual or teams based on measurement of how near the game balls are to the target ball.

Boccia is a very popular indoor and outdoor game, and unofficial courts can be set up on virtually any hard surface. It can be played recreationally, for fun or competitively and players can go on to compete internationally as it is a Paralympic sport.

Boccia was originally designed for wheelchair users with cerebral palsy and is based on the popular French game of boules or petanque, although people of all abilities can play from a seated position in recreational play.

Boccia Skills Award Scheme

The Boccia Skills Award has been developed to allow anyone the opportunity to develop skills related to the game of Boccia. The introductory award scheme has been specifically based upon participation and skills development, to encourage individuals and groups to enjoy the challenge and fun side of Boccia. Specific Skill Tasks form the basis of assessment for each of the three levels, which can be introduced and practiced as either specific Boccia award courses or over an indefinite period of time as individuals develop at their own rate.

The natural progression for individuals completing the introductory awards is to enter the high award scheme: However the most important objective is to encourage people to enjoy playing Boccia.
